WAKE UP CALIFORNIA was conceived by Amy Kalish as a 501c4 to bring statewide and community organizations together, and create a unified voice for a reason around housing policy. Now, with the creation of Better Way CA, we are making that happen. While WAKE UP is primarily focused on the intersection of housing density and fire hazards, there are larger issues — the YIMBY and Abundance agendas are controlling a narrative that has other repercussions, and needs to be challenged.

Better Way has a broader goal — to challenge the narrative directly. As a statewide coalition we can bring our resources to gather, while backing up our individual efforts. It will take all of us to bring a rational perspective to our housing policy, challenge falsehoods about the nature of our housing crisis., and identify the tools needed to actually solve it.

To have an impact we need to lobby collectively, challenge the laws and tell our story. State housing mandates must be reality based and consider vital fire and evacuation access issues — currently irrelevant. Change means supporting candidates with platforms of common sense policy that create affordable housing without destroying communities’ quality of life or putting residents at risk. 

All of our individual organizations can continue our work, but Better Way CA magnifies our messaging with collective strength.
